Omega’s 40th Lunar Landing Anniversary: Buzz Aldrin and the Omega Speedmaster Chronograph.

Edwin Eugene “Buzz” Aldrin was born on January 20, 1930. Buzz is an engineer, retired United States Air Force pilot and astronaut who was the Lunar Module pilot on Apollo 11, the first lunar landing. He was the second person to set foot on the Moon, following his mission commander Neil Armstrong.

Aldrin was selected as part of the third group of NASA astronauts in October 1963 being promoted to back-up crew for the mission. According to different NASA accounts, he had originally been proposed as the first to step onto the Moon’s surface, but due to the physical positioning of the astronauts inside the compact Lunar Landing Module, it was easier for the commander, Neil Armstrong, to be the first to exit the spacecraft.

Aldrin is a Presbyterian and an active freemason. After landing on the moon, Aldrin radioed earth: “I’d like to take this opportunity to ask every person listening in, whoever and wherever they may be, to pause for a moment and contemplate the events of the past few hours, and to give thanks in his or her own way.” He received Communion on the surface of the Moon, but kept it secret because of a lawsuit brought by atheist activist Madalyn Murray O’Hair over the reading of Genesis on Apollo 8.

Buzz Aldrin joined Omega CEO Stephen Urquhart at Omega’s Flagship Boutique in New York last June in order to mark the anniversary of the lunar landing. He spoke about the importance of keeping and active speace tourism programm and, of course, lunar exploration, including artists and writers so that thet can reflect on the experience.

Omega has been an active participant on NASA’s programs and, because of being moonlanding’s 40th anniversary, the wristwatch company focuses on its iconic Speedmaster Chronograph along with President John F. Kennedy (the one who promoted United States’ lunar landing.

Michael Phelps joined Omega CEO Stephen Urquhart for the official opening of the first-ever NYC location with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April, 22nd. The magnanimous event took place in one of the brand new stores recently opened by Omega in New York placed in the Fifth Avenue.

During this exclusive event, Phelps signed and donated his personal Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean watch to be displayed at the store. He then spent time disassembling an Omega watch with the store’s team of watchmakers.

Later, he took time to meet and greet the many fans who had lined up outside the boutique. The day was capped off with a VIP cocktail reception where Phelps celebrated the flagship opening with Omega executives and influential New Yorkers.

Omega Planet Ocean Watch

According to its movement, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean watch features an Omega 2500 caliber, a self-winding chronometer, a Co-Axial Escapement movement with rhodium-plated finish and a power reserve of 48 hours. It also has a domed anti-reflective and scratch resistant sapphire crystal. The Omega Seamaster Ocean watch is water resistant to 600 meters / 2000 feet. It features screw in crown, unidirectional rotating bezel, helium escape valve, date and also chronometer.

By the middle of the 16th Century the watchmaking industry started developing in Switzerland when the Huguenots, French Protestants who were members of the Reformed Church, established in the region. Geneva and later the region of the Jura soon became the epicenter of the watchmaking industry .

During the windy months of winter in the region of the Swiss Jura, the country people dedicated their time to manufacture movements for Swiss precision pocket watches. Peasants received orders from Geneva through the Comptoirs, selling organizations which provided the peasants with the components of watch mechanisms in order to have them assembled. In spring they collected the finished movements and started trading. Until 1830 only watches with key mechanisms were produced in the region. In 1860 Louis Ulysse Chopard founded his company in the small village of Sonvilier. There is no record of the first years production but we know that since then it has produced watches that meet the highest standards of quality and precision. The first Chopard watch we know is a thick pocket watch with the signature Chopard e Sonviller.

In order to identify his production from the rest, L.U Chopard focused on quality and precision and developed the finest watches in Sonvilier. From the beginning of the 20th century on, domestic traditional watchmakers started disappearing gradually due to Industrial Revolution. Chopard decided that there was still a clientele for his watches and left to Eastern Europe. He visited Hungary, Poland and Russia and his watches reached CZar Nicholas II’s court. In 1920 the company moved to Ginebra. The period between the two World Wars was critic for many watchmakers and jewelers, but not for L. U. Chopard, his son and their watches. Louis Ulysse Chopard’s grandson, André-Paul Chopard, was the head of the firm until 1963 when he met Karl Scheufele III -member of a family with a great reputation in the jewelery business- and, finding himself with no descendants, decided to leave the company in the young man’s hands.

Cartier Tank Watch

The Cartier Tank Francaise watch, introduced in 1917 during the First World War, was Cartier‘s most famous collection. Louis Cartier was inspired by the tough new war-machine, that was introduced to the fighting in Europe, and designed a rugged yet beautiful watch that became a classic. The Cartier Tank watch is manufactured in stainless steel, all types of gold or combined, and is available in three sizes: Cartier lady watches, with a 25mm x 20mm case; mid-size with a 31mm x 25mm case; and Cartier man watches with a 35mm x 29mm case. The case is rectangular, may be decorated with diamonds and has a cabochon crown; the dial is very easy-to-read and has bold roman numerals; the bracelet has rectangular links combined in a particular pattern-design that is similar to the tank’s track. Though the Cartier Tank watch is a classic formal watch, it is very reliable, and is also water-resistant.
