The History of Hublot

The gold Hublot watch, created by Carlo Crocco in 1980, a watch with the first natural black rubber bracelet ever seen in the watch making scenario, has turned into the inspiration of lots of watch makers and it has become absolutely famous worldwide. The creator of the gold Hublot was grown up in an Italian family of watchmakers. It was around1967 when he designed his first watch.

In 1980 he established his own company, MDM Geneva, and his aim was to create a watch that would be popular and seek all over the world. He sought to design a watch with a sporting style, yet elegant and fashionable.

Trying to ignore any trend, he created a very elegant sporting watch with an extremely sensitive chosen materials, which could be wearing anytime, anywhere.

He followed the belief that the key to success was simplicity and he modeled his look on a ship’s porthole. His lunette is secured to the case by twelve titanium screws. They mark the hours in a mixture of form and function.

Rubber caught the attention of watch making brands in the mid-90s. This proved the validity of the materials chosen for the creation of Hublot watches and their status and reputation was gained as great classics.

After three years of research it was possible to design and produce a bracelet and highlight the outstanding properties of natural rubber that seems to regenerate after being in contact with the skin daily.

The sensation that a customer has when the two strands are strapped to the wrist is amazing. It immediately adapts to the wrist and it reflects an extraordinary lightens and comfort.

The rubber bracelet is nowadays the only used on Hublot watches and it seems to be the only option and possible choice from now onwards.

The Hublot black natural rubber bracelet features an incredible porthole-shaped case, combination of brushed and polished metal, together with the black dial.

The impressive look of this timepiece is even highlighted by a covering mount that highlights the image of the porthole.

Royalty as well as a huge amount of celebrities worldwide, become fond of Hublot watches. It was a few years later that Hublot enterer the exclusive and elitist circle of great Swiss making watches brands.

Hublot began what was the last independent family watch making business, a family firm by essence, following a mono-product concept, always maintaining its independence an awesome personality.

Limited series collections, with a variety of dials in chased enamel and bas-reliefs, covers preciously engraved, inset or enameled, are the result of Hublot’s master and outstanding craftsmen. It is due to them and their meticulous attention given to every single detail that the limited series collection was created. These talented craftsmen in each specialty help in the production of made-to-measure pieces which enrich an revalue the Hublot Art Collection”.

Carlos Crocco decided to look for the right person to lead his watch making house since his multiple activities for the Foundation MDM to help underprivileged children all over the world kept his busy most of the time.

Jean-Claude Biver is one of men to have made his mark on Swiss watch making. Having been born in Luxembourg in 1949, he and his family moved to Switzerland when he was 10.

He attended school at theSaint-Prex. He later followed his studies at the Collège de Morges and University of Lausanne. He arrived at Brassus with a HEC diploma.

Although the Vallée de Joux was a complicated watch making circle, he was absolutely marked by it.

He eventually moved and he built up his house near a farm that some years later would become Blancpain’s head office. He got married in 1979.

Jean-Claude Biver had a clear aim in his life: he set his mind to learn as much as he could from Audemars Piguet in 1975. In 1981, he and his friend Jacques Piguet, bought up the Blancpain business, which had been out of production.

The two friends and partners decided to keep and save the brand’s identity by returning to the origins and traditions at a time when quartz was its highest wave of success.

The Blanpain was given birth by this concept. However success was not an easy thigh to get and it did not came right away.

That year, watch making was undergoing a crisis. Jean-Claude Biver believed that everything had to go badly for people to start thinking about creating something new. He thought that the Blancpain had become and object of outstanding attention.

Ten years after the Balncpain was created, the company was already launched and extremely successful.

But the two partners decided to sell it, even though it was successful. They wanted to protect the business.

In 1992 Nicolas Hayek and the Swatch Group bought up Blancpain.

Jean-Claude Biver remained in the company as a boss as well as a member of the Swatch Group Directors’ Committee until 2003, year in which he decided to take a sabbatical year to rest and relax.

Carlo Crocco realized that he was the man for the position.

Therefore, instead of the year off he had thought of, in 2004, Biver was on the post of CEO and board member of Hublot. He had several projects for the development of the house, including the launch of the Fusion, which illustrated Hublot’s new objective.

In 1980, the engagement between gold and rubber gave birth to a unique watch, the Hublot.

It was twenty five years later that the brand decided to reinterpret its DNA and it went back to its first principles. The brand fashioned though the traditional art of watch making.

Putting together rare material such as ceramics and gold, pink or gold titanium and rubber. And this fusion brought together movements of Swiss traditions with the XXI century art of watch making – while keeping the unique Hublot feeling for watch design.

Graham Chronofighter R.A.C. 43mm

Introduced for the first time in 2001, and based by a system initially developed by pilots of the Second World War, at that time the Graham Chronofighter was equipped with a mechanism of quick-action coaxial control located on the left side which allowed a practical, fast and ergonomic manipulation. In 2005, Graham introduced the Graham Chronofighter Oversize. Nowadays, in 2006, as showed in the pictures on the following pages, the Graham Chronofighter R.A.C is the successor of the first Chronofighter. It has a new powerful cam with a paddle which improves its grip and a button that is even bigger together with column wheel. The Graham Chronofighter R.A.C. is moved by a chronograph movement of column wheel making sure it has an absolute accuracy, know as the French word “roue a colonne” , getting as a consequence the R.A.C acronym. The Graham Chronofighter is considered as the best chronograph movement in the watchmaking industry. The mechanism of column wheel consists of six triangular columns which control the Graham chronograph functions. The Graham chronofighter R.A.C is available in a broad range of versions, each one showing different facets of its fascinating traits. The typical controls of the Graham chronograph have been provided with a paddle that assures a better grip. It is a reminiscent of the design of the steer wheel of high-speed racing cars. The Graham Chronofighter R.A.C. is a superlative machine of time. The switch buttons on the left position like this were used for the first time by the bomber pilots throughout the Second World War. During their high-altitude flights- more than 26.000 feet- the extremely low temperatures obliged them to use mitts. Therefore, they needed an instrument which had a long switch button which could be activated by their thumb finger. The “Start” and “finish” functions activated by the thumb have a better reaction than with the rest of the fingers. During the years in which the sport times were measured by hand, the thumb was used to stop the chronometer.

Chanel J12 Watches

In 2000 Chanel launched for sale on the market the initial model of the unique Chanel watch line; the Chanel J12. But the important stage of the Chanel J12 occurred in 2005 when the Chanel J12 designers made this watch be considered as a Fine Jewelry watch. In a few month this watch became the watch of all the “first times” . The world of boats was Chanel inspiration to give birth to the Chanel J12.

  • first model water-resistant to 200 meters
  • first unisex watch
  • first watch in high-tech non-scratch ceramic material

It was again a victory for Chanel and some years later the success in this model resulted in the creation of a new version of the Chanel J12 passing from the deepest black, exclusively used up to then, to an intense opalescent white, obtained using a new high-tech snow-toned color. This model was improved not only for men but also for women who can enjoy a J12 with an extremely glamorous diamond version. Something to highlight about the Chanel jewelry watch was the incorporation of the tourbillon; the most sophisticated of all watchmaking complications .

Arising the challenge of producing a fine jewelry watch of complicated nature, Chanel had the most experienced Swiss watchmakers to develop the exclusive ‘CHANEL O5-T.1’ movement. Ultra-thin ceramic bottom-plate (just 2mm thick), optical glass cage, 18-K white gold bridge are some of the exceptional features that take part of the Chanel watches mechanism.

In 2006 the Chanel J12 Haute Joaillerie appeared on the watches market. The Chanel J12 Haute Joaillerie was composed by 605 baguette-cut diamonds which caused great success among clients that loved the Chanel codes (black and white, diamonds and ceramic) The ceramic was adopted by the watchmakers to give the timepiece a brilliant black and white union. This beautiful creation reflects the Chanel belief that white and black colors are a perfect match and also go with everything.

A year later, the Chanel J12 Tourbillon Haute Joaillerie was created. The characteristics of this watch were: the dial of the watch ; two 0,3 mm ceramic plates as well as 9 index diamonds, the tourbillon appears in the head-turning with 568 baguette-cut rubies embracing the watch’s bezel, case and bracelet, white gold, black ceramic and also rubies.

Today, the House of Chanel watches is still very much on demand due to a new generation of clients. The Chanel J12 is the first unisex watch for Chanel and it is characterized by clean lines and both masculine and feminine features, making it a watchmaking revolution. In 2003 Chanel introduced the Coco Mademoiselle and the Chanel In-Between Wear, for younger women.

The History of Chanel

Gabrielle Coco Chanel rose as one of the premier fashion designers in Paris, France when in 1912 opened her first millinery shop and she remained up to the 1920s.She set up in the fashion world including simple suits and dresses, also women’s trousers, costume jewelry, perfume and textiles. In addition to this, she got to replace the corset with comfort and casual elegance.

Gabrielle Coco Chanel was born in Saumur in 1883. She belonged to a very poor family and her mother died when Gabrielle was six years old leaving her and her four other children to the care of her father who soon abandoned them to the care of relatives.

But to our surprise, Gabrielle Coco Chanel has always said that her date of birth was 1893 and her place of birth was Auvergue.

In her life appeared two men important for her career; one a wealthy military officer and then an English industrialist . Both were Gabrielle’s source to establish a millinery shop in Paris in 1910, expanding later to Deauville and Biarritz. These two men also helped her to get in touch with costumers among women of society, and that was the way her simple hats became popular as well as her name adopted with her brief career as a café and concert singer .

By the 1920s Coco’s fashion house spread considerably. She was the first in the French fashion world working in jersey and soon her chemise set up a fashion trend with its look that women followed. On the contrary to previous decades when the corset was considered fashionable, Chanel’s fashion trend made a difference with her relaxed fashions, short skirts, and casual look. Chanel herself adopted this more comfortable style which other women considered inappropriate to wear.

Chanel introduced a different style not only in the fashion world but also in other areas. In 1922 Chanel launched the Chanel No. 5, a perfume which became and remained popular as well as a profitable product of the Chanel brand. In 1924, Pierre Wertheimer became her partner in the perfume business. Wertheimer owned 70% of the company; Coco Chanel received 10% and her friend Bader 20%. The Wertheimers continue to control the perfume company today.

In 1925 Chanel introduced her signature cardigan jacket and in 1926 did the same with “little black dress”. Most of her fashion remains almost unchanged from generation to generation.

It is also known that Chanel served as a nurse during the Wold War I and this caused the fashion business in Paris to fade for a while. In addition to this, her relationship with a Nazi officer also led to some years where the fashion business went down. However, her natural and casual clothing became popular again in 1954 including the Chanel suit and purses. In 1971 she launched to the market the pea jackets and bell-bottom pants for women but this was also a sad moment because it was in 1971 that she died. Karl Lagerfeld has been chief designer of Chanel’s fashion house since 1983.

Apart from working with high fashion, she also designed stage costumes for such plays as Cocteau’s Antigone (1923) and Oedipus Rex (1937) and film costumes for several movies, including Renoir’s La Regle de Jeu. Katharine Hepburn starred in the 1969 Broadway musical Coco based on the life of Coco Chanel.

In 1987, when Chanel watches appeared on the market, they gained the same classic elegance as her clothing had. The concept of quality, elegance and dependability have marked watches which are marketed under the name Chanel as well as all products. They keep their reputation as the sophisticated and elegant products of the House of Chanel, with avant-garde designs. Chanel watches have been in a high price range due to the power of the name, as well as to the earned reputation for quality and beauty.

Another point to be mentioned is the Chanel watches designers known by the quality of their designs, the creation and the production of exclusive watch straps. Each watch passes tests for scratch resistance as well as water resistance. Every single watch is individually numbered . Moreover, the quality and durability of Chanel watches make a two-year warranty on the watch a great selling point.

“Fashion passes, style remains”: one of the most famous sayings of Coco Chanel, the great founder of the brand that marked an icon in history. With this she has summed up for more than a century the basic principle upon which the history and activity of the Parisian have based on. Coco Chanel must have detested the small-sized illegible jewelry women’s watches of the era , she simply called such watches ‘Microbes’. Chanel is related to the creation of jewels, accessories, watches, garments or perfumes that over time become great classics, and which do not disappear with the finish of the passing trends that introduced them into the market. Chanel has always had the ability to face the difficult and fascinating challenge of remaining up-to-date even though time goes by, when they create models with the gift of a timelessness magic charm…
