Audemars Piguet: The Royal Oak Carbon Concept

Audemars_Piguet The Royal Oak Carbon Concept
Carbon fibre has been the preferred material for high-performance applications that demand sturdiness. Formula 1 race cars, America’s Cup yachts and, even aerospace vehicles, have fully leveraged the material’s technical properties: strength and lightness.
Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet is a pioneer according to the use of carbon fibre for function as well as form. The Royal Oak Carbon Concept is surprisingly light thanks to materials such as forged carbon, amorphous carbon coatings, ceramics, titanium, and anodized aluminium, which forms the watch’s green central bridge. The absence of a dial provides a full view of the hand-wound Caliber 2895 movement’s key components: the tourbillon carriage—comprising more than 70 parts yet weighing a mere 0.45 grams—and the column wheel, which is the chronograph’s nerve centre. Audemars presents a novel twist on the 30-minute chronograph with a linear minute counter consisting of two columnar scales, with tens of minutes on the left and single minutes on the right. Tiny windows that correspond to each numeral mark elapsed time by changing from white to black. The wearer shifts from winding to time-setting by adjusting the stem.

NEW 8C Spider Alfa Romeo LIMITED EDITION

(8C Spider Alfa Romeo)
.

Production of the 8C Spider began in 2009, in Modena, with Maserati in charge of building the cars. As previously announced, 500 cars will be built, each priced at €175,000 (US$241,000) excluding taxes. The production version was unveiled at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show. 35 of 500 Spiders are going to United States.

.
Alfa Romeo claims that the 8C Spider’s top speed is 290 kilometres per hour (180 mph), which makes it slightly slower than the coupe version. The brakes on the Spider are Brembo carbon-ceramic units. The Spider has a two-layer electrically operated fabric roof. The windshield frame is made of carbon fiber to try to maintain a 50/50 weight distribution.

.
The Spider version of the super sports car, designed by the Alfa Romeo Style Center, and derived from the Alfa 8C Competizione, the Gran Turismo model that has been so successful throughout the world.
.
This new car highlights the excellence of the brand in this sector, in the same way that several of its Spiders from the past are acknowledged as being some of the most beautiful cars in the world, cars such as the Giulietta Spider from the 1950s or the legendary Duetto, made famous by the 1967 film ‘The Graduate’, starring a young Dustin Hoffman.
.
The distinctive feature of the 8C Spide is its fold.away roof, available in a choice of colours and fitted with an electrohydraulic system activated with the simple push of a button on the dashboard. The roof consists of two overlapping fabrics: a weather-proof multi-layer outer fabric and an inner layer ensuring total acoustic comfort in the cabin. The result is the last word in style, aerodynamics, practicality and comfort.

Blancpain Super Trofeo Chronograph: The high-powered alliance between two legends

Blancpain and Lamborghini have joined forces in creating an exceptional automobile championship. Played out over six events per year, the Super Trofeo stars a fi eld of the newest Lamborghini Gallardos. To celebrate these superlative races, the Manufacture in Le Brassus is presenting a Super Trofeo fl yback chronograph, a resolutely sporting watch with a production run limited to 300.

Encounters between two myths are bound to engender exceptional events. The alliance between the world’s oldest watch brand and one of the most iconic car manufacturers has resulted in the creation of an exceptional automobile championship. The Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo is not only the fi rst Lamborghini racing series, but also to become – right from the start of the fi rst race in May – the world’s fastest and most demanding single-make championship.

Gleaming Lamborghini Gallard LP560-4 cars – the latest version of this legendary model – are to face off on six equally fabled race tracks during the year 2009. Each of these speed machines bears the colours of the watch manufacturer, while the car driven by Blancpain’s President and CEO, Marc A. Hayek, is entirely dedicated to the brand.

For Marc A. Hayek and Stephan Winkelmann, respectively at the head of Blancpain and

Lamborghini, this partnership in a joint championship enables them to fulfi l the dreams of many devotees of exceptional mechanical engineering. When Lamborghini decided to join the race to push the boundaries of speed, its decision to work with Blancpain – a watch brand renowned for its pioneering sprit and mechanical expertise – was a natural choice for this high-octane union.

The fi rst single-make racing series in Lamborghini’s history, the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo 2009 features six European events scheduled from May through October, at Adria (Italy), Norisring (Germany), Spa Francorchamps (Belgium), Silverstone (United Kingdom), as well Catalunya (Spain) and Paul Ricard (France).

Blancpain Supertrofeo Chronograph

Cutting-edge technology

Boasting exceptional performances fuelled by 570 HP and 540 N/m torque enabling it to reach top speeds of over 300 km/h, the latest racing version of the Gallardo line from Lamborghini is a truly exceptional car. Its mettlesome character and its taut, sophisticated lines have inspired the Blancpain designers and master-watchmakers in creating the latest gem from the Manufacture in Le Brassus: the Super Trofeo Chronograph endowed with a fl yback function. Like the powerful engine of the Gallardo, this new Blancpain chronograph displays state-of-the-art design and all

the attributes of cutting-edge technology.

The case specifi cally designed for this prestigious line is inspired by the sleek profi le of the Lamborghini Gallardo. Crafted in steel coated with a DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) treatment – blacker than ruthenium and more resistant than PVD – the 43.5 mm-diameter case that is waterresistant to 100 metres features alternating satin-brushed and polished surfaces. Highly sought after for its hardness and its anti-allergenic nature, as well as its intense colour, DLC treatment combines the properties of diamantine carbon (hardness, insulation, chemical resistance) with those of graphite (black colour, elasticity). Based on state-of-the-art technologies, DLC is a treatment applied in thin layers (sometimes less than 2 μm) by a “ vacuum deposit ” process.

Moreover, DLC boasts an extremely low friction coeffi cient and remarkable chemical inertia, two qualities that ensure excellent resistance to wear, corrosion and friction, as well as a flexible kind of hardness.

Blancpain Supertrofeo Chronograph I

Black is black

At this heart of this new sophisticated and performance-oriented case, the Blancpain Super Trofeo Chronograph, lies its throbbing “ engine ”, Calibre F185. To reinforce its dynamic nature, the movement of the Blancpain Super Trofeo has been coated by NAC – a state-of-theart electroplating treatment that blackens the movement bridges and main plate. The mechanical self-winding Calibre F185 is endowed with a 40-hour power reserve and comprises 308 parts.

This movement powers a range of functions including hour, minute, small seconds and date display at 6 o’clock, as well as the chronograph indications with a central sweep seconds hand, 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and 12-hour counter at 9 o’clock. For instant-measurement enthusiasts, the Calibre F185 also drives a “ fl yback ” function. The unmistakable black dial is distinguished by two red and white 9 and 12 o’clock numerals stylised to evoke the numbers painted on the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 racing cars. Another exclusive feature of this exceptional model is its gold oscillating weight engraved with the inscription “ Super Trofeo 2009 ”.

A sports model through and through, the Blancpain Super Trofeo Chronograph is teamed with a strap in alcantara – like the seats in the Lamborghini Gallardo – secured by a steel folding clasp. Available in a limited edition of 300 with its individual number engraved on the case-back – the Blancpain Super Trofeo Chronograph comes in a presentation box inspired by the taut, opulent lines of the ultra-dynamic Gallardo.

Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin: The AMVOX2 DBS Transponder

.
.
.
.
The AMVOX2 DBS Transponder is the most recent addition to the exclusive AMVOX range of timepieces created jointly by Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin – and the most vivid example yet of the powerful synergy between the two companies. A dramatic fusion of high-tech engineering skills and the finest watchmaking expertise, this revolutionary timepiece features an integrated transponder circuit that allows the owner to unlock or lock their Aston Martin DBS simply by pressing the sapphire crystal.
.
.
.
Like the AMVOX2 Chronograph DBS, this elegant new timepiece has no push buttons: the vertical trigger system of mechanical levers patented by Jaeger-LeCoultre allows the chronograph to be started, stopped and reset by pressing the sapphire crystal. Augmenting these functions in the AMVOX2 DBS Transponder is a miniaturised transmitter system that controls access to the owner’s DBS. As the driver nears the car, they simply press the ‘OPEN’ position on the watch glass (between 8 and 9 o’clock) and the door-opening system is activated.
Pressing the ‘CLOSE’ position (between 3 and 4 o’clock) locks the car again.
The unique connection between Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin is evident elsewhere on the watch, too. The exquisitely detailed dial features a suspended metallic grey DBS logo, there is a subtle Aston Martin emblem on the movement operating indicator, and the ruthenium grey bridges, satin finish and black background evoke the look of the DBS’s instrument panel. The outer dial ring, meanwhile, has an opening that allows a tantalising glimpse of the chronograph functions – just as the slender wheel rims of the DBS expose the mighty brake calipers behind.
.
.
.
.
Created specially for Aston Martin DBS owners, the AMVOX2 DBS Transponder is the first mechanical timepiece to operate not only as a chronograph but also as the key to a luxury sports car. An engineering masterpiece in miniature, its beauty and functionality stand as testament to the inspiration and expertise of the partnership that created it.

NEW Breitling Cosmonaute Limited Edition

(NEW Breitling Cosmonaute Limited Edition)
.
.
.

1962. The space race was well under way. Already a supplier to civilian and military aviation, Breitling naturally took a keen interest in this new human adventure. Based on the Navitimer chronograph, the brand’s technicians developed the Cosmonaute, a space-going version of this instrument indicating the daily 24 hours in a single sweep of the dial. Given the extremely relative nature of day and night in space, this configuration prevents possible confusion between midday and midnight. On May 24th 1962, the astronaut Scott Carpenter tested this instrument under real-life conditions during his orbital flight aboard the Aurora 7 capsule.
.
.
.
For its 125th anniversary, Breitling has chosen to issue a limited series of the model that became the first wrist chronograph to experience space travel. Only 1,000 of these Cosmonaute watches will be produced, all equipped for the occasion with an original version of the intriguing 24-hour dial. Further accentuating its distinctive character and in tribute to a modern design icon from the 1960s, the Cosmonaute Limited Edition is fitted exclusively with the rigid perforated Air Racer bracelet.

Perpetual motion reinvented. Jaeger LeCoultre Atmos 56

(Jaeger LeCoultre Atmos 56)

The world’s only clock movement that runs on thin air has reached its eightieth birthday. The Atmos 561 was created to celebrate this landmark occasion; it is completely balanced and simple according to its design.

Since its invention, the Atmos has embodied the passion of its creator, Jean Leon Reutter. Designer Marc Newson, who has always been fascinated by the Atmos clock, has designed its case as a Baccarat crystal bubble, which brings out its ethereal nature, lends it a futuristic elegance and catapults it into the ranks of today’s great designs. This exceptional clock is being made in a limited series of 888 pieces. The Atmos 561 illustrates the creativity of its designer.

Born in Australia, 44-year-old Marc Newson was the one who, long attracted to Jaeger-LeCoultre’s legendary clock, one day contacted the Grande Maison and offered a design for it. This suggestion was greeted with immediate enthusiasm: Jaeger- LeCoultre accepted his offer. In the Atmos 561 Newson managed to capture, in the staggering innovative power of his interpretation, the very essence of the Atmos clock, which for eighty years has symbolised the dream of quasi perpetual motion.

NEW: The ORB Bluetooth headset redefines the ear-ring: From headset to ring.

the-orb-bluetooth-headest-1

Bluetooth headsets have come a long way in the style stakes since they are usually designed to mould to the shape of the ear. Even though they were specially designed, they still can be a little bit awkward to carry in a pocket. The innovative Bluetooth headset called Orb solves this problem by transforming from a wireless earpiece into a ring that can be worn on your finger.

The Orb transforms from a ring with a simple twist to become a Bluetooth headset capable of hands-free calling. Incorporating NXT technology the Orb provides high quality bone conduction audio without the discomfort of placing a device inside the ear. A Deluxe edition also features a Flexible Organic Light Emitting Device (FOLED) screen to display caller ID, calendar reminders and voice-to-text information for communication without taking the ring off the finger.

the-orb-bluetooth-headest

Developed in partnership between Hybra Advance Technology Inc. and AbsolutelyNew Inc. For those who like their Bluetooth headsets with extra bling will be able to opt for a limited edition designer model featuring decorative gemstones. All units will offer a class 2 Bluetooth range of 30 feet.

The base model Orb is scheduled to launch in January 2010 carrying a suggested retail price of USD$129, while the Deluxe edition is due in April 2010 with a price of USD$175. The Limited edition designer models are also due in April 2010 with their price based on the value of the gemstones incorporated into the device.

IWC 2009 Collection: The Little Prince, a tribute to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Saint-Exupery

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

The Little Prince (French: Le Petit Prince), published in 1943, is French aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s most famous novel. Saint-Exupéry wrote it while living in the United States. It has been translated into more than 180 languages and sold more than 80 million copies making it one of the best-selling books ever.

An earlier memoir by the author recounts his aviation experiences in the Saharan desert. He is thought to have drawn on these same experiences for use as plot elements in The Little Prince. Saint-Exupéry’s novel has been adapted to various media over the decades, including stage, screen and operatic works.

Saint-Exupery and the petit prince

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and The Little Prince

There is The Museum of The Little Prince in Hakone, featuring outdoor squares and sculptures like The B 612 Asteroid, The Lamplighter Square, the sculpture of the little prince. There is a large Little Prince Park, The Consuelo Rose Garden. But the main part of the museum is the indoor exhibition. Before France adopted the Euro as its currency, Saint-Exupéry and the little prince were on the French 50 Franc banknote; the artwork was by Swiss designer Roger Pfund. One of the anticounterfeiting measures on the banknote was micro-printed text from Le Petit Prince, visible with a strong magnifying glass.

In 2006, IWC honoured the early pilots with a limited edition of chronograph watches dedicated to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, well known pilot and author of one of the most famous novel of all times: The Little Prince.

In 2009 the fourth and final series of watches dedicated to Saint-Exupéry was launched. It is a Big Pilot’s model, made in a limited edition of 1.900 timepieces

World Debut at the 79th Geneva Motor Show 2009: Rinspeed iChange

The Swiss auto powerhouse Rinspeed presented, at the Geneva Motor Show 2009, the ‘iChange,’ the world’s first car whose body adapts to the number of passengers on board.

In seconds a streamlined one-seater sports car transforms into a comfortable car with ample room for three. The trick: At the push of a button the rear end of the teardrop-shaped car magically pops up.

The basic idea behind the “iChange”: The energy demand of a vehicle depends mostly on its weight, the type of engine it uses, and its aerodynamic properties. The engineering-services company Esoro has built an extremely lightweight car weighing in at only 1’050 kilograms. To power the car, the Swiss specialists chose an electric motor. The idea of the pop-up rear end was conceived to account for the sizeable effect aerodynamics play in fuel consumption.

The “iChange“ features an adaptive body. The sole driver is conveyed in a teardrop-shaped car that offers optimal aerodynamic properties and thus minimized energy consumption. If more than one person need to be transported the expanding rear provides room for two passengers.

The energy for the electric motor comes from lithium-ion batteries that are available in two different stack configurations for short- and long-distance driving. The electric motor of the “iChange“ produces 150kW, capable of propelling the car to a top speed of 220 km/h. The sprint from rest to 100 km/h takes just slightly over four seconds. This impressive performance is made possible with the help of a six-speed pre-selector gearbox from the Subaru WRX car. The gearbox and drive train are lubricated with eco-friendly lubricants from Motorex. Custom-made lightweight 17” and 18” forged wheels with aerodynamic shrouds are supplied by light-alloy wheel specialists AEZ. Pirelli P Zero tires in size 215/40-17 in front and size 245/40-18 in back provideoptimal grip.

The concept car has no doors. The entire electrically powered roof section of the car measuring just 1.03 meters in height tilts forward to allow passengers to board.
